Learning to Trust Again

If horses could tell their own stories, Lucy’s would be one of resilience, patience, and second chances.

LUCK rescued Lucy from a kill pen. When she arrived in Cleveland, she was fearful and deeply distrustful of people. She faced the back corner of her stall and kicked when anyone came too close. For months, no one could safely handle her, and some wondered whether she could remain in the program.

Then healing began quietly.

A few LUCK participants spent time outside Lucy’s stall, asking nothing of her. A determined trainer refused to give up. Through patience, consistency, and calm connection, Lucy slowly began letting people back into her world.

Just months later, Lucy carried her first rider—a legally blind 13-year-old girl named Julia. Their bond was immediate.

Today, Lucy is one of LUCK’s most trusted horses and even a successful show horse. Her gentle, protective nature is especially evident with children.

The horse everyone once feared became one of the safest horses in the barn.

Lucy reminds us that healing rarely happens through force. Sometimes it begins when someone is simply given the patience, safety, and trust they need to connect again

Oliver is a Fell Pony who came to LUCK all the way from England. For much of his early life, he was a stallion in the show world—handled by professionals, expected to perform, and accustomed to a very particular way of life.

Then everything changed. Oliver was gelded, flown across an ocean, and introduced to a new home, new expectations, and new relationships.

Sweet, curious, and full of personality, Oliver is also very good at testing boundaries. Sometimes he wants to be in charge. Sometimes he pushes to see what he can get away with. What worked for him before doesn’t always work anymore.

That can feel familiar.

When life has been unpredictable, staying in control can feel safer than trusting someone else. Boundaries can feel threatening rather than reassuring—until experience teaches us otherwise.

Oliver gives participants a chance to practice something different. Through patience, clear communication, and consistency, they discover that boundaries don’t have to mean rejection or punishment. They can create safety, trust, and stronger relationships.

Oliver reminds us that strength and gentleness can exist together—and that trust grows when we know where the boundaries are and believe they will be honore

Finding Strength in Difference

Freya may be one of the newest members of the LUCK herd, but she’s hard to miss. At just four years old and nearly 17 hands tall, this American Quarter Horse is enormous, affectionate, and happiest when she’s close to people.

Freya was also born with a club foot, a condition that affects the shape of her hoof. Special shoes keep her comfortable and balanced, but there are some things other horses may do more easily. Because the condition could be inherited, her previous owner chose not to breed her.

Freya’s story carries a powerful lesson: needing extra support doesn’t make us less capable or less valuable. Sometimes thriving simply means finding what works for us.

Freya may do some things differently, but she brings her own strengths to the herd—gentleness, patience, affection, and quiet resilience.

She reminds us that our differences don’t diminish who we are. They are part of who we are.

Carrying On with Grace

Earl is nearly 30 years old, but you might never guess it. This large American Quarter Horse still moves with energy and pride, while his quiet patience puts even nervous riders at ease.

But Earl carries lasting evidence of harm. Early in his life, he was severely abused for not behaving as someone expected. The injuries left permanent damage, leaving him with lifelong challenges that require special feed, dental care, and a modified bridle.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Earl isn’t what happened to him, but who he is today. Despite what he endured, and thanks to new, kind owners, he is gentle, patient, and deeply trustworthy.

Earl reminds us that difficult experiences can leave lasting marks without defining who we become. Healing doesn’t always mean erasing what happened. Sometimes it means finding the support, trust, and connection that allow us to keep moving forward—with softness, strength, and an open heart.

Bear is a Holsteiner who came to Cleveland from France by way of Florida. A former stallion with a thick neck, compact build, and unmistakable presence, he has spent much of his career soaring over big fences.

European training taught Bear to enter the arena prepared to compete. While other horses might take time to look around, he announces himself with a signature prance and expects the course to begin immediately.

His self-assurance helps riders rediscover their own.

Bear requires riders to remain attentive, communicate decisively, and move past hesitation. His experience and ability have helped many people regain their footing after a difficult ride or loss of nerve.

Now 19, Bear continues to earn blue ribbons and approach his work with enthusiasm. He shows us that courage does not always return all at once. Sometimes it grows through small successes—and with the help of a spirited partner who already believes the next hurdle can be cleared.
